It is said that people who stood along the route taken by the monks were reported to have been healed of many illnesses, especially coughs and fevers.

yay me!

remember over here where i talked about getting root planing?

this is the thing where the hygenist goes around inside your mouth with a tool and says 222 232 or whatever your numbers are for your teeth. prior to my root planing in november my numbers were bad. i mean, really bad. like mostly 4-6's, this is the number that determines how healthy your gums are. after that treatment, i went out and bought myself the recommended "sonicare" toothbrush. i also really, really tried to floss on a more consistant basis. anyway, yesterday after my 3 month cleaning she did the scan of my teeth again for comparison and my numbers are almost all 2-3's now! there were still a couple of 4's in the back that i need to work on, but overall, she was very pleased with how great it's going. i was too. i have a lot of MAJOR dental work in my head. super large fillings and more crowns than all the european royalty together. but my mother had dentures by the time that i was born when she was 35 and i don't want to go down that road.

just goes to show what a little hard work can do. :)

new glasses

my new eye glasses finally arrived. this is the first time i have gone rimless. i love the frames but the eye doctor has moved me into progressives this go-round. i am not sure that i like them because while they are proving great for driving, i am having a hard time seeing my computer screen.

well, that was fun... NOT!

i had my RF Rhizotomy on wednesday. all i can say is... OUCH! that hurt like a son of a bitch. unlike the first procedure back on December 22nd. that first one didn't hurt and i felt like i was a kid again (for 6 days, anyway). this time i had to be somewhat awake during the procedure. it hurt like hell. and as i lay on the table crying on my stomach with my bare ass out for the world to see, the anesthesiologist stroked my cheek and tried to comfort me. afterward, in the recovery room the nice nurse that was caring for me gave me every drop of the allotted pain medication that i was entitled to. my cousin picked me up and took me home. i slept from 4:30 until 7:00 when my niece showed up with dinner. i was awake with her for about an hour. then i went back to sleep. i woke up yesterday morning long enough to call in sick. then went back to sleep until almost 4:00 PM yesterday afternoon.

today i am not so sleepy, but my back is hurting. my boss came by a minute ago and told me to go home. i have an appointment with dr. crazy this afternoon so i might indeed take off in a little while.

to end on a good note: i also had a appointment with the hemotologist on Wed morning. my iron levels are up again! that makes the last two visits that i have been well in the normal range! yay me! oh and i finally got all the insurance and drug stuff straightened out and am back to being my medicated even keeled self!

i'd rather have a frontal lobotomy...

So, I saw the pain doc yesterday. Since the pain returned after 6 days she thinks this is the way to go:

Radiofrequency Rhizotomy

Radiofrequency (RF) rhizotomy or neurotomy is a therapeutic procedure designed to decrease and/or eliminate pain symptoms arising from degenerative facet joints within the spine. The procedure involves destroying the nerves that innervate the facet joints with highly localized heat generated with radiofrequency. By destroying these nerves, the communication link that signals pain from the spine to the brain can be broken.

Preliminary Testing - Before an RF rhizotomy exam can be scheduled, it is important for our radiologists to verify the areas where the pain originates. Exams required to determine these areas might include MRI of the spine, facet nerve injections with local anesthetic (numbing medication) and steroid (anti-inflammatory medication), and possibly discography.

Procedure preparation - A technologist or nurse will contact you 24-48 hours prior to your appointment to review medications you are currently taking, especially pain medications and blood thinners, discuss known allergies and your medical history, as well as answer your questions.

Please bring previous imaging study results (MRI, CT, x-rays) such as films, reports, or CD-ROMs, if available.

The use of sedation during your procedure is at the radiologist's discretion.

If prescribed, do not eat or drink anything 4 hours prior to your any procedure. You may be offered either oral and I.V. sedation.

If sedated, you will need someone to drive you home and stay with you for 12 hours post-procedure due to the effects of the medications. Please make arrangements.

During the procedure – what to expect:

RF rhizotomy is an advanced injection procedure.

It's important that you remain awake during the procedure to provide important feedback to the radiologist. A radiologist will perform the procedure using a thin needle electrode placed adjacent to the degenerative facet joint. The radiologist will check the needle placement using a fluoroscope (x-ray camera), which is connected to a T.V. monitor. X-rays will be taken at this time. To verify the needle position, the nerve may be stimulated using low voltage electricity.
The stimulation will cause the affected muscles to rhythmically contract. The radiologist will then use numbing medication (anesthetic) to put the nerve to sleep. Then the radiologist will apply heat to the nerve via the electrode for approximately 60 seconds. This heat is designed to create a lesion, causing the nerve to become cauterized or burnt, which in turn breaks the communication link to the brain. This procedure is then repeated at other levels including the levels above and below where the pain is originating. Throughout the procedure, a radiologist and nurse will monitor your condition and comfort level closely.

After the procedure – what to expect:

Due to the sedation, a nurse will review some guidelines that you will be asked to follow post-procedure (pertaining to driving, drinking alcoholic beverages, etc.). You may experience numbness and/or relief from symptoms for 2-8 hours after the procedure due to the anesthetic. Once the local anesthetic effects have worn off, your usual symptoms may return and may be more severe for up to 5-7 days after the procedure. You should keep a record of symptoms following the procedure and report to the referring physician at your follow-up appointment. Patients must understand that approximately 10-12% of those people who have undergone RF procedures experience elevated pain for up to four weeks, rather than improvement. Improvement is usually noticed by 2-3 weeks after the procedure. However, it may take up to four weeks before the beneficial effects of the rhizotomy are noted and a decrease in symptoms is realized.

I've been scheduled for the afternoon of the 21st of January.

ouch...

i went to the dentist this morning for what i thought was going to be seating of a new crown followed by a cleaning. what i got instead was the first quadrant of root planing. and now i will have to go back two more times so that the hygenist can finish my mouth.

it wasn't quite as bad as i was expecting it to be after her description. she used this new topical numbing stuff called oraqix. when i go back on thursday for the two left side quadrants she will use the oraqix again, but when i go back for the lower right side they will have to use novocaine. ICK!

the good news of the visit was that i found out my dental insurance covers 90% on most things so i will be able to get those icky metal fillings replaced with composite for practically nothing! yay! those old silver filling have always made me hate my mouth.
