adventure on the high seas... or not...

well, we got home on sunday night. what an awful experience. i had a fever of 102 for 3 days. it seems though that this trip was doomed from the start.

first, i took a hard fall in san jose airport last saturday as we were leaving for LA. my left knee and right elbow took the brunt of the fall. OUCH!

we arrived at the dock to board the ship last sunday and were told that the ship had arrived late "due to weather concerns" and that we would not be able to board at 1:00pm like we were supposed to. so 3000 of us stood around in lines of groups 1-17 waiting to board. we were in group 11. the ship left port 4 hours late. the weather on our "at sea" days was cold and windy. i talked with some crew members that told me that the real reason the ship arrived late was because a passenger had died and they had to drop the body off in san diego. then as we were docking in pto vallarta, our ship hit a royal caribbean ship that was already docked. then i was diagnosed with the H1N1 and had to stay in isolation. J was able to get off the ship in both mazatlan and cabo. she was feeling like she had a cold coming on when she went to the beauty shop on friday night to get her hair done. while she was at the salon i was surfing through the few channels they have on board. and stopping on the "cruise channel" which shows the ships route on a GPS map. i looked at it three times because i thought i was hallucinating. we were about four hours out of cabo when the ship had to turn around and medically evacuate the captain because he had a heart attack. then we turned around to get back on track and hit a storm with swells as tall as the ship. last night was super fun on board... NOT! the ship was heaving and rolling and slamming back down. i was almost tossed out of bed a few times. we arrived in port at 2:45 pm (the normal arrival time is 7:30 am) had to clear customs along with the other 2998 passengers. by the time we got to the curb outside the cruise terminal it was 4:15. our flight was at 5:00 pm from LAX. i told the taxi driver to get us to LAX as fast as was possible without killing us and that guy rocked. we arrived at LAX at 4:46 pm. luckily our flight was delayed and we made it home. and i am NEVER going on a carnival cruise to the mexican riviera again.

coffee bomb...

the other day i was on my way to pick up notsoccer mom's son after school. as usual i stopped at starbucks on my way. about half way to the school i picked up my coffee to take a sip and the cup exploded. hot coffee down my leg, all over the console and in a big puddle under my feet. the next day i took my car to the car wash to get it detailed. these ducks were sitting in a patch of dirt right next to where i was waiting for my car.

the car wash is famous for the ducks that live in and around it.

don't follow me, i'm lost too...

i was down at andronico's the other night and i got lost on campus. i swear i took the scenic tour of campus housing. i know i passed most of the frat houses, and something called the "enchanted broccoli forest".

i would love to say that it was a first but, i have been getting lost in broad daylight too. it seems like every time i go down to the campus for lunch or something i take a wrong turn and end up getting lost in the maze of one way and dead end streets. i might have to start carrying a map of the campus with me whenever i leave my office!

so the hands free law was created so that people could pay more attention to the road instead of their cell phone. this video is a great example of what else people are doing.

there but for the grace of the goddess....

a few days ago dooce posed this question to her readers:

Indulge me for a second and consider this scenario: let's say you're given the opportunity to donate some money to a desperate family who would use it to feed their children, but were only able to do so if you donated the same amount of money to someone you knew would use it to buy crack. Would you do it?

her answer doesn't surprise me.

it brought to mind an experience i had not too long ago.

as i was leaving OSH, i was approached by a man who asked me for some spare change. he said that he and his friend were hungry and had only managed to collect $1.75 that far.

i rarely carry cash because i use my visa check card for almost everything (member rewards points!). i told the man that i didn't have any money on me and he started to turn away. i stopped him and said again that i didn't have any cash, but added that if they would like to walk with me to the sandwich shop across the street i would buy them a meal. we walked across the parking lot and crossed the street to the shop. as i went inside with the man, his friend stayed outside. i told the man to get his friend so that he could pick the sandwich of his choice. the friend had thought i was only going to buy one sandwich for them to share. after he ordered the cheapest sandwich on the menu, he turned and looked at me with tears in his eyes and thanked me. i told the clerk to give the men the footlong sandwiches so that they could have a second meal later. the first man kept thanking me for being so kind. i paid for the meals, complete with drinks and chips and left. as i walked back across the street to my car i thought to myself, there but for the grace of the goddess go i.

no one should EVER have to beg for a meal. we, as a people, routinely look through homeless and disadvantaged people as if they were something we might step in and soil our shoes. do most of us ever give a thought to how close we are to being in those shoes?

i lost my job in july. i have no savings because i live in one of the most expensive places in california. unemployment in this country is a travesty. in order to pay my rent and other bills i am forced to make hard choices every day. do i pay my car payment/insurance this month or do i make the $450 cobra payment? do i fill my gas tank or pay the cell phone bill.

how did we, as a nation, get here? and how do we make it better? the people who earn the least have the most to lose. would you be surprised to learn how many people near you are one pay check away from being homeless?

most homeless people didn't get that way by choice. yes, there are a lot people that got there by being addicted to something, be it drugs, alcohol or something else. but many, many people are homeless because they lost their jobs. something has to change.

reading demon...

i stopped in at the brand spanking new (see artist rendering below) san jose public library around the corner from my house today.

shocked to find out that the library card i had that is attached to my keychain isn't valid in the new place because it is a santa clara county library card. whatever. i thought san jose was part of santa clara county. anyway, i got myself the card i needed and went to look for the book i have been wanting to read.

i am a freak about books. especially library books. i don't like touching books that i don't know where they came from or who has been reading them. people don't wash their hands, y'all. that just grosses me out.

so anyway, i looked and looked. this brand new library didn't have ANY of the books i was looking for. in fact they didn't have any books at all by two of the authors i wanted. can you believe that? i ended up getting one book on depression and that was it. i thought this was a library.

what you need to know before the election...

i got this email from Move On. please take a minute and read about the woman that mccain has invited to run the country after he croaks from the stress (IF HE GETS ELECTED, which he WON'T!).
*****

Yesterday was John McCain's 72nd birthday. If elected, he'd be the oldest president ever inaugurated. And after months of slamming Barack Obama for "inexperience," here's who John McCain has chosen to be one heartbeat away from the presidency: a right-wing religious conservative with no foreign policy experience, who until recently was mayor of a town of 9,000 people.

Huh?

Who is Sarah Palin? Here's some basic background:

She was elected Alaska's governor a little over a year and a half ago. Her previous office was mayor of Wasilla, a small town outside Anchorage. She has no foreign policy experience.1

Palin is strongly anti-choice, opposing abortion even in the case of rape or incest.2

She supported right-wing extremist Pat Buchanan for president in 2000. 3

Palin thinks creationism should be taught in public schools.4

She's doesn't think humans are the cause of climate change.5

She's solidly in line with John McCain's "Big Oil first" energy policy. She's pushed hard for more oil drilling and says renewables won't be ready for years. She also sued the Bush administration for listing polar bears as an endangered species—she was worried it would interfere with more oil drilling in Alaska.6
How closely did John McCain vet this choice? He met Sarah Palin once at a meeting. They spoke a second time, last Sunday, when he called her about being vice-president. Then he offered her the position.7
This is information the American people need to see. Please take a moment to forward this email to your friends and family.

We also asked Alaska MoveOn members what the rest of us should know about their governor. The response was striking. Here's a sample:

She is really just a mayor from a small town outside Anchorage who has been a governor for only 1.5 years, and has ZERO national and international experience. I shudder to think that she could be the person taking that 3AM call on the White House hotline, and the one who could potentially be charged with leading the US in the volatile international scene that exists today. —Rose M., Fairbanks, AK

She is VERY, VERY conservative, and far from perfect. She's a hunter and fisherwoman, but votes against the environment again and again. She ran on ethics reform, but is currently under investigation for several charges involving hiring and firing of state officials. She has NO experience beyond Alaska. —Christine B., Denali Park, AK

As an Alaskan and a feminist, I am beyond words at this announcement. Palin is not a feminist, and she is not the reformer she claims to be. —Karen L., Anchorage, AK

Alaskans, collectively, are just as stunned as the rest of the nation. She is doing well running our State, but is totally inexperienced on the national level, and very much unequipped to run the nation, if it came to that. She is as far right as one can get, which has already been communicated on the news. In our office of thirty employees (dems, republicans, and nonpartisans), not one person feels she is ready for the V.P. position.—Sherry C., Anchorage, AK

She's vehemently anti-choice and doesn't care about protecting our natural resources, even though she has worked as a fisherman. McCain chose her to pick up the Hillary voters, but Palin is no Hillary. —Marina L., Juneau, AK

I think she's far too inexperienced to be in this position. I'm all for a woman in the White House, but not one who hasn't done anything to deserve it. There are far many other women who have worked their way up and have much more experience that would have been better choices. This is a patronizing decision on John McCain's part- and insulting to females everywhere that he would assume he'll get our vote by putting "A Woman" in that position.—Jennifer M., Anchorage, AK

So Governor Palin is a staunch anti-choice religious conservative. She's a global warming denier who shares John McCain's commitment to Big Oil. And she's dramatically inexperienced.

In picking Sarah Palin, John McCain has made the religious right very happy. And he's made a very dangerous decision for our country.

In the next few days, many Americans will be wondering what McCain's vice-presidential choice means. Please pass this information along to your friends and family.

what is your major malfunction?????

color me pissed off.

my niece J is teaching a class (and i use that term VERY loosely since it is for landmark education) this weekend in san francisco. she asked me to feed her kitties, boo boo and yogi (i know, right?). being the auntie that i am of course i said i would. i love my fur-nephews.

so, i am driving up to her condo. i am on the 4 lane interstate in the third lane from the left driving 65. it is the posted speed limit. traffic in the two lanes to my left is flying past me. the lane to my right is taken up pretty much by people entering and exiting the freeway.

this woman screams up behind me in her car. i thought for a minute she might actually hit me. then she changes lanes to the right, pulls even with me, looks at me and shakes her head at me and speeds off after giving me the one finger salute. me, the one driving the legal posted speed limit (yeah, what a shocker!) in the slowest lane that isn't for exits and entries as if i am the one doing something wrong. WTF? why does it feel like a crime to obey the law?

pardon my ...

rant

i have a couple of things i need to get off my chest, er.... mind.

first up: MALLS

when i was a teenager we didn't have malls to hang out at. valley fair mall was an open air mall with a macy*s at one end and an emporium at the other. there were things like lerners, and woolworths in between. we didn't wander aimlessly through the mall. we didn't bump into adults and not say excuse me and we didn't block things like doorways or escalators. there were rarely more than 5 of us together at one time.

if we wanted to hang out in a "group" our folks dropped us off at the bowling alley or the roller skating rink. we had movie theaters but they weren't the mega-plexes they are these days.

the reason for this rant is that on saturday night after having seen an afternoon showing of "kung fu panda" (which, by the way, i can highly recommend!) we (notsoccer mom, her son, and i) had decided to go see "you don't mess with the zohan!" in trying to get up the escalator we got caught in the middle of a herd of teenagers. a few of them took the escalator up, the rest stopped dead in their tracks as if trying to decided if that was really what they wanted to do. they stood there not moving. i finally yelled at the ones in front of us to either "get on the f*cking escalator or get out of the way, the grown-ups would like to go to the movies!" i've never seen teenagers move so quickly. but what did they do at the top of the escalator? you guessed it. stepped off and stood there.

GRRRRRR!!!!!

you know those kiosks in the middle of the mall walkways? i get so tired of the men from the dead sea skin products trying to acost me that i want to knee them in the groin. the ones at the ceramic hair straighteners don't bug me anymore since my hair is about an inch long. but i'll be damned if those dead sea guys don't want to try and sell me their secret beauty products the moment i open my car door on mall property.

oh, and then.... the other day, as i was passing by the pro-active booth the girl working there actually leapt off her stool and jumped in front of me trying to sell me some of her acne treatments. um, i know you work on commissions, but did you even LOOK at my skin before you all but attacked me? hello??? i have skin that most people are jealous of. and no, i don't follow some expensive beauty regime. i wash my face in the shower with whatever i am using on my hair. when i get out of the shower i slap on some oil of olay with sunscreen and i am good to go.

ok, enough about malls. on to my next rant.

100 calorie packs of cookies and other snacks.

right now there are three empty packages of nabisco lorna doone 100 calorie packs in the garbage can under my desk. the idea behind the 100 calorie pack is great. but if you really like something, seven of those little 1/2" squares is just not going to satisfy. believe me. i can tell you from experience.

enough said.

and last but by no means least. my local safeway.

yesterday i went grocery shopping. my friend armando is coming back to work. i thought it was tomorrow (that's another story). so i was going to make him a cheesecake. i bought one of these:

easy right? wrong. i don't know what the hell they do when they stock the shelves at my safeway but they apparently don't check the expiration dates. i got my container of chocolate cheesecake filling home. opened it up took a little spoonful out to taste. then after putting the lid back on flipped the container over to discover the expiration date had passed. and not just by a few days. the date on the bottom of the container was FEBRUARY 29, 2008. WTF? i mean, i would still be pissed, but i could understand if it was a few days past the date but 101 days past the expiration date??? aren't they supposed to check that stuff when they restock? use the FIFO (first in, first out) system maybe?

i take the offending object back to the store along with the receipt. i march straight to the customer service desk where i stand for almost 10 full minutes before anyone seems to notice my presence (which pisses me off even more). finally a girl comes out of the office and asks if she can help me. i hold up the receipt and the container and tell her the deal. i tell her that it is unacceptable. she tells me "ma'am, i am only responsible for the customer service area." um, isn't this a customer service issue? so i ask her to get me a manager. manager comes. again i hold up receipt and container. again i state "unacceptable." i add, "oh by the way, right now at this very minute there are expired packages in your prepacked produce that are outdated." she tells me "i don't see those on your receipt." "no, you don't. because i didn't buy them. they are EXPIRED!" "oh," she says. so she gives me a refund of my money for the cheesecake. i say, "that's it?" and she (i kid you not) looks at me, tilts her head to one side like she is thinking for a second and then says "sorry." and walks away.

exorcism.

it's as if someone has put a curse on me. this has not been my year.
last night, driving home from work, i had an accident. my car is in pretty bad shape. the other car had nary a scratch on it. :( thankfully neither of us were hurt.

and i have this pretty copper colored chevy aveo to drive!
