recent movies enjoyed...

last weekend notsoccer mom, her son and i went to see:
hotel for dogs

i thought it was very cute. i think i enjoyed it more than the boy, which is a little surprising to me.

then, this past weekend we went to see:
ink heart

i really enjoyed this movie. afterward, nsm was telling me that there are two other books in the series, now i want to read them all.

what would you do to survive?

went to the movies with my niece and a friend of hers last sunday to see one of the winners from the sundance film festival.

frozen river is a classic "what would you do to survive" film. i wasn't expecting to like it as much as i did. i highly recommend it, if it is playing in a theater near you.

whoa!

on saturday last, after parting ways with notsoccer mom and her son, i did some shopping at michael's and then took myself to see the dark knight on the big screen as previously ordered to by my niece. holy cats, it was good! i didn't think it was too long. heath ledger was brilliant as the joker. aaron eckhart is a hottie and christian bale... DAMN! if you haven't already seen this on the big screen, hie thyself away to the nearest theater.

WOW!

yesterday i took the train to san francisco to meet up with my friend D. i usually love taking the train to the city. i can read, listen to my ipod, or just gaze out the window. unfortunately, yesterday there was a giants game. the train that is usually comfortably empty was packed to the gills with giants fans. the two men sitting behind me talked about sports the ENTIRE time. i'm talking about a ride that takes about 1.5 hours because the train stops EVERYWHERE. at one point i wanted to turn around and say, "could you two PLEASE just shut the hell up for five minutes????" around palo alto this little chinese lady got on and sat next to me. talking on her cell phone the whole rest of the way into the city. AAARRRGGHHHH!!!!

D and i had breakfast at Dottie's True Blue Cafe on jones. yummy! even though we had to wait in the line for an hour the food was well worth it. i was sitting there looking at the decor, wondering to myself why there were pictures of dorothy dandridge all over. it took me about half an hour before i made the connection. dorothy, dottie... um DUH!

anyway, i had a hard time deciding so i ordered "the True Blue Plate Special" it's your basic breakfast. a small juice, two eggs cooked any way, bacon, home fried potatoes, and buttermilk dill toast. the specials on the board hanging on the wall are what made it hard to decide. there was a delicious sounding eggplant strata that we saw someone at the counter eating. he gave it the thumbs up. then, a man at the table beside us had ordered the other thing that i had been considering. sweet potato, caramelized onions and gruyere cheese tart. with so much delicious food how was i to choose? that is how i ended up with the basic.

but what a surprise that was. the bacon was perfectly "flubbery" as i like to call it. not greasy in any way. just porky delicious. the scrambled eggs were the lightest and fluffest i have ever had. and the home fries? they made me want to move in and call dottie's my home if i could have them every day. as D can attest, i usually skip the potatoes all together since they tend to make me so full after only a few bites that i can't eat what i really need off the plate... the protein.

i still had a hankering for something sweet so i ordered the chocolate chip french toast with roasted pecans and got that to go. managed to nibble on that on the train ride home.

anyway, after breakfast, we went over to the de young museum. D works for one of the major corporate sponsors of most all of the major museums in SF and thusly gets us in free.

i introduced her to the incredible art of Dale Chihuly (pronounced chee-hoo-li).
this is the artist himself.

a piece he did for the bellagio hotel in las vegas

these last two are just some of his work that i adore. i can't even begin to describe how dales art touches me. it is so organic and natural in form. it almost makes me want to weep from the pure beauty of it.

i caught the 6:00 pm train home. talked to some nice people on the ride. ate my chocolate chip french toast (no syrup needed!) and then my niece J met me at the mountain view station. we jammed over to the AMC mercado and caught the 8:10 pm showing of the new X-files movie "I want to believe". i liked it. i am not going to say any more about it though because i don't want to ruin it for the x-filers that haven't seen it yet.

niece J saw "batman" on saturday night and demands that i go see it on the big screen. soon as the severance check arrives that will be on the agenda.

oh my GOD...

how come no one told me?

P.S. I Love You was SO good. i don't want to say it was a "chick flick" because i would like to believe that there might be a straight man out there some where that might have enjoyed it. i had it in my netflix queue because one of the guys i work with recommended it to me because his wife had loved it. i finally watched it on monday night. i alternated between laughing and crying through the whole movie. in the end though i thought it was a really, really great movie. oh, and can i just say, gerard butler! YUM!!!!!

sshhhhh, it's a secret...

the first time i saw the secret of roan inish was back when i worked for one of the big computer memory companies in 1994. our CEO would rent out the century 22 theaters and show three different movies. one of them was always "goodfellas" because that was his favorite movie. my ex-husband went to watch that. i chose "the secret of roan inish" because it sounded interesting. and i like the idea behind the story.

it is one of the most beautifully filmed movies i have ever seen. anyway, it was on tv on saturday night so i actually stayed up until two AM to watch it.

prince caspian...

after several false starts we finally found a movie theater that had actual working A/C on saturday.

we settled in to watch "the chronicles of narnia: prince caspian" i loved the movie. while the basic message of the movie was still good over evil, i found the movie to be less preachy than the first, which i also loved. actor ben barnes is delightful to look at, but he and most of the actors playing the telmarins should have chosen one accent and stuck with it throughout the movie.

i loved the character of reepicheep. an adorable little mouse that causes people to under estimate him and over state the obvious.

the next narnia film "voyage of the dawn treader" is due out in may of 2010 and i am happy to say i will be waiting with bated breath for its release.

movie extravaganza....

on friday, cousin D was able to get off work after only a half day so we made plans to go to the movies. we met at Oakridge mall where we bought tickets to see the ever so delightful christina ricci in Penelope. the movie was adorably cute with the subtle message that first we must accept ourselves.

next we did something that i haven't done since i was a teenager and don't condone. we theater jumped to the other boleyn girl. i mostly enjoyed the movie. i would have enjoyed it more if i hadn't spent half of it explaining things to cousin D who was apparently absent the day they taught history in school. the costumes were exquisite.

then i found that roommate L had left becoming jane out for me. so last night i hunkered down and watched that. it was an ok film. the whole time i was watching it though, i kept thinking in my head, "wait a minute... jane austen didn't get married." needless to say, i was correct and she never actually married mr. lefoy.

wednesday a' chez barbie..

i took my floating holiday today for my birthday since i had to be there yesterday. my friend D also took a vacation day. she came over bright and early. we sewed, we drank coffee, we gabbed about nothing and everything. then we went to togo's for lunch. after lunch we went to the movies to see john cusak in "the martian child". it was so good. we also got to see a preview of his next movie that is due out around christmas time. it's called "Grace is gone". and he plays a man whose wife is in the military and she gets killed while on a tour of duty leaving him to raise their two daughters. it looks great. like a real tear jerker but great.

tomorrow i am back to work. :(
