random things from my weekend...
this is a long one. you better go potty first and then get a drink and a snack...
friday:
immediately after work: drive to pharmacy with 2 prescriptions that need refilling. one is an asthma med, the other is one of my OCD meds. i belong to a plan with the company that makes this particular asthma medication. they send me a coupon every month that is good for $20.00 off my co-pay every month. good thing, because the co-pay for this drug is $50.00. i know, right? anyway. i go to the drop off window. i hand them to the clerk. i tell him i will wait. he tells me the waiting time is about 20 minutes. so i go get the rest of the things that i need and then have a seat in the waiting area. i wait, and i wait. i play a game of bejeweled on my phone. i wait some more. i read the diabetes magazine from the stand. finally one of the clerks calls me up. so i pile up my other purchases on the counter. she starts ringing things up. i hand her the coupon for the medication. she reads it and puts it down. she rings up the rest of my things and then picks up the coupon again. she reads it again, front and back. then tells me that i can one use one or the other. “one or the other what?” i ask. “your insurance or the coupon” she tells me. “oh, no, no, no. that coupon is from the drugs manufacturer. it is to help with the co-pay.” again she tries to tell me i can’t use both. i look at her and say “you must be new here.” she answers with “yes, i am new but that has nothing to do with this.” i look around her to the pharmacist. “paramla! can you come over here?” i nearly shout across the pharmacy. i explain what the clerk is trying to do before the clerk can even blink. paramla tells the clerk, “you go do xyz, i’ll take care of barbie.”
why the clerk didn’t just ask for help in the first place is beyond me. but to make me call in the “principal” on her.
oh wait.... i almost forgot the best part of this story. later on friday night: the second drug was for my OCD. they gave it to me in two little bottles like it comes from the factory. the bottles were so small that the prescription label didn't fit on the bottle. well, i didn't notice this until after i got home. i had to take them back to the pharmacy and ask them to change them to the regular brown bottles because of how they had labled them. when i arrived at the "consult a pharmacist" window paramla looked at me and asked "did we forget something?" ok, i feel bad now... as i type this, and we did laugh about it at the party yesterday but at the time i was ready to climb over the pharmacy counter and fill it myself. i was all, "um, you do know that this is an OCD med, right? look at how it's packaged. you can't do that. i need this label to be flat." and now that i am remembering it again, she actually said "but it is flat." "no, it's not. see it's not stuck to the bottle all the way" i said showing her the problem. she watches me flapping the bottle around the window (thinking thoughts of "this girl is crazy!" i am sure!). then she says "the bottle is too small to do it that way." "ok, well then... you are going to need to put this in a different bottle. because i can't have these sitting on my shelf. i won't be able to sleep if i bring these bottles into my house. do you know how long it takes me to peel the label off the singular bottle????" anyway, long story short, she put a "note" in my file about putting all my meds into those brown bottles with the labels stuck to them all the way around.
i'm betting that my asking for them to start the label at the edge of the tab so they all start and end in the same place on the bottle is probably too much to hope for. ;)
later still on friday night found me sitting in a room at the hospital emergency department having a breathing treatment with 4,872,963 other asthmatics in san jose. no big deal. my xopenex just didn’t seem to be doing the trick.
saturday morning i wanted to wash my comforter so i packed all my dirty laundry, sheets, towels, linens, and the comforter into my truck and headed to a nearby laundry mat that was unbelievably clean. i think you could possibly have eaten off the floors in this place. weird. anyway. no fewer than four people questioned my judgment at having stuck my $300 down comforter in the washing machine. but, when it was done i pulled it out and showed them the tag that said it was machine wash and dryable. so neener neener neener on them for paying $70 to dry clean theirs.
after everything was dried and folded and packed back into the truck i headed off to my cell providers store to pick up a hands free device so that i can be in full compliance tomorrow when the new law takes effect. then to the AMC theaters to pick up my gift for notsoccer mom’s son’s birthday. after that i needed to get him a card so i went across the street to target. i crossed the threshold into the store at about 5:15 pm with the sole purpose of getting a birthday card for the boy. when i finally freed myself from the time vortex that is target it was 7:45 and i had spent $200.00 and i still did NOT have a birthday card. i swear i don’t even remember what i bought. all i know is that when i did manage to break free i had a hankering for steak like you wouldn’t believe.
i went home and vacuumed my room so that i could make the bed. then i brought in the bags of everything i bought. set up the air purifier next to the bed. i do remember buying that. and then ended up not even eating dinner because by the time i got the bed made and my room put back together it was too late to eat before bed.
sunday was notsoccer mom’s son’s birthday party. the kids all seemed to have a blast. it’s nice now that he is getting older the kids all entertain themselves.
notsoccer mom did all the invites and candy wrappers and stuff that all goes with the theme that the boy picked. and like every year, she did a great job.
i did get that steak i was craving finally. last night i went to black angus for dinner and tonight i have leftovers!!!! yay for leftovers!
oh yeah... in the it's a small world department: i was talking with NSM's friend L at the party. i found out that we have the same asthma doctor. her dad was a dentist that for many years practiced in the office next door to my ENT so they are good friends. her dad is being treated by my old sinus specialist Dr. Doogie.
isn't that weird?

apparently...
i am a coach whore and didn't even know it.
on saturday i took my niece J to carmel to celebrate her birthday. she has this gorgeous rare green satchel coach bag that she just got from ebay. she wanted to look for a wallet to match. so we drove south on 101 and stopped in at the gilroy outlets. the coach store there was super crowded and the AC was on the fritz so it was like an oven. after about 20 minutes of browsing we decided to grab a snack to tide us over until dinner and get back on the road. we headed on to carmel, i found a parking space on the street, right across from the coach outlet on ocean. yay!
we went inside and looked around. the next thing i knew i was standing on the sideway with a coach shopping bag in my hand.
this is what was inside it:

the coach small soho bag in pink

and the mini pink change purse.
the receipt said $77.
what a deal considering that the soho bag normally sells for $199.
niece J also bought an adorable bag that is a gorgeous neutral leather.
after we finshed at coach we wandered around the shops of carmel. we just made it into natures bounty before rick could lock up for the night. i reminded him that i was roommate L's friend and we had a nice visit. niece J and rick really hit it off. they talked about crystals and stones for a good half hour before i dragged her out if the store so rick could close up shop. we walked some more and then went to dinner at my favorite italian place in carmel. the little napoli bistro. we had a lovely dinner of beef carpaccio, pasta carbonara, and chicken parmasean. niece J had a glass of the owners special wine. i opted for the prosecco.
after a wonderful dinner we drove south to the carmel highlands inn. after parking the car we popped into the california market restaurant for coffee and desserts. we sat on the deck (under the heaters) and watched as night gathered. it was gorgeous!

know how to tell that you are getting old?
the sibling closest in age to me turned
today.
i am the last one of the siblings that is under the age of 50. i will turn 48 in november.
it's a little scary to think about for me. my brother that is having his birthday today has already had a quadruple bypass. our father had his first heart attack at 53 and was dead by 68.
i'm a little freaked out.

big trees...

me with the birthday girl!
last sunday, for notsoccer mom's birthday we went to the roaring camp rail road in felton for a train ride. the weather was gorgeous!
here is a picture i took in catherdral grove.

after the train ride we drove around to look for some where to eat. we ended up at the boulder creek brewery. the burgers here were amazing. i had the one called "the lomand". it is caramelized onions and gorgonzola cheese on an angus beef patty. DELICIOUS! and the ale? holy smokes was it good. so good, that both notsoccer mom and i got a half gallon to bring home.

if i ever mention the word fondant again...
please feel free to beat the snot out of me.
my dearest friend, notsoccer mom is having a birthday tomorrow. usually i buy her a cake from one of our local bakeries that we both like. this year i got the bright idea to try out my mad baking skillz. hahahahahahahaha... she asked for a cake that looks like a present.

honestly, i had NO FREAKIN IDEA how hard it is to work with fondant. it's a good thing that i don't have carpal tunnel. duff goldman and his team at charm city cakes make it look so damn easy. well, i am here to tell you that they lie. it was back breaking work kneading and rolling out this stuff. thank god, it came already colored because if i had had to knead in the coloring too, notsoccer mom would be enjoying cupcakes from safeway for her birthday.

more pressies!!!
on wednesday night when i arrived home after having a brain fart at the mall and totally forgetting to go to my shrink appointment i found a box that the postman had left for me. it was from my lovely friend morven from new zealand had send me some pink birthday yummies! a package of pink wish strawberry tim tams that i must admit i ate the entire package in one sitting. a package of pink party wafers that were also quite yummy. and a package of some bikkies that look a little like the "mothers" brand of circus animal cookies. i can't wait to open those.

they were delish! i can't thank you enough, Morv!

so you think you can dance report

we got there about 30 minutes prior to showtime. had to sit through a looped tape of past american idol winners and tour facts from the SYTYCD kids.
once the show started it was fabulous. in addition to the top ten finalists from last season (danny, dominic, jaimie, kameron, lacey, lauren, pasha, neil, sara, and the winner - sabra) they also had pasha's original partner anya, jesus (the guy from paso robles), shauna and hok (yay!).
anyway, they performed all the best dances. lauren and pasha did their shane sparks skeleton routine to fuego by pitbull. sabra and kameron did the amazing grace routine. lacey and danny did a hot, hot, hot samba number that had been choreographed by dimitri from the second season to hip, hip, chin, chin by club des belugas. sara and neil did their disco routine to knock on wood. lacey and neil did the mia michaels piece that she choreographed in her father's memory to time by billy porter. sabra and pasha did their quickstep to mr. pinstrip suit by big bad voodoo daddy. neil and sabra did their awesome table piece to sweet dreams by eurythmics. dominic and sabra did their hip hop routine to make it work by ne-yo. sabra and dominic also did their comtemporary routine to i'll stand by you by the pretenders. danny and anya did their jive routine to avril lavigne's girlfriend. jesus and sara did the vagabond routine choreographed by wade robson to cabaret hoover from the triplets of belleville soundtrack. shauna and somebody did the easy on down the road dance from the wiz. i say shauna and somebody because i don't remember jimmy being there. the best part of the night was hok and jaimie doing their wade robson hummingbird and flower jazz routine.
all in all everything about the show was great, except for the fact that simple tee shirts were selling for $35. what's that about? it's 4 pieces of cotton for sobbing out loud.
anyway, many, many thanks go out to roommate L for this wonderful birthday present. i had a most enjoyable time.

wednesday a' chez barbie..
i took my floating holiday today for my birthday since i had to be there yesterday. my friend D also took a vacation day. she came over bright and early. we sewed, we drank coffee, we gabbed about nothing and everything. then we went to togo's for lunch. after lunch we went to the movies to see john cusak in "the martian child". it was so good. we also got to see a preview of his next movie that is due out around christmas time. it's called "Grace is gone". and he plays a man whose wife is in the military and she gets killed while on a tour of duty leaving him to raise their two daughters. it looks great. like a real tear jerker but great.

tomorrow i am back to work. :(

you say it's your birthday....
it's my birthday too, yeah!

happy birthday to me!
first thing this morning the starbucks girls treated me to a latte. then i arrived at work (on time for a change!) to find a birthday card on my desk from coworker A. then coworker L arrived bearing a huge cinnamon roll. shortly after that coworker J arrived with a lovely pecan tart.
when am i going to eat all this yummy goodness? i might just burst... but don't worry, i'll try not to get any on you. ;)

my birthday tea...
my birthday is coming up this week. today i gathered my closest loved ones for a birthday tea at Lisa's Tea Treasures at The Pruneyard in Campbell.
none of us had ever been there so it was quite fun.

this is me with the little gift spoon that Lisa's gave to me as the birthday girl(and i use that term very loosely...).

this is me with my niece J.

and here is one of our adorable server jennifer.

best birthday present EVER...
on wednesday night i went to the marc anthony and jennifer lopez concert at the san jose arena, courtesy of an early birthday present from Mrs L and her hubby.

(the light board outside the arena)
i know it sounds corny but something in his music just speaks to my soul. it has gotten me through a divorce, a move, being laid off twice in one year, the start of a relationship, the end of that relationship, another move, three job changes, the death of a close friend and these past two weeks of me being off work for stress related illness.

(me on the concourse before the show)
i have seen him in concert 4 times. this was the first time i have seen JLo as it was her first ever concert tour.
as always, marc came out and gave everything in his show. if i had any complaints it would be that the breaks between songs were too long. and of course, if i had my way, he would play every song from every album, but that would take days....
(marc singing)
JLo is noticeably pregnant and just so freakin' cute in person. her show was very high energy! lots of jumping and dancing around. made me wonder if that was good for the baby (or babies, depending on who you listen to).

(JLo dancing)
did i mention i was in row 29? :)
